Central Connecticut State upends Mount men, 3-1
7 Nov, 2008Central Connecticut State scored three unanswered goals to down Mount St. Mary’s 3-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) men’s soccer action on Friday.
Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York) notched his seventh goal of the season to pace the Mount (9-8-0, 5-3-0 NEC) while Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made seven saves in the loss.
Hadji Diop and Eddie Floyd each found the twine for the Blue Devils (9-6-2, 3-4-1 NEC) and Paul Armstrong made two saves in the winning effort.
Despite Mount St. Mary’s grabbing a 1-0 advantage, Central Connecticut State recorded three-straight goals to go on for its sixth-straight win against the Mount.
After Detzel handed the Mountaineers a 1-0 edge when the sophomore knocked in a deflection off a Blue Devil defender at 37:53, Central Connecticut State started a three-tally run on an own goal at 40:49. Connor Smith then served the ball to Diop, who found the twine at 41:41 to hand the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
Floyd increased the advantage to two goals off a helper by Robert Cavener at 58:13.
Despite the loss, Mount St. Mary’s remains in contention for its first NEC Tournament berth since 1999.
