Radford women nab four All-Big South selections
5 Nov, 2008After completing one of the best regular seasons in school history, Radford women's soccer was awarded with four Big South All-Conference selections, including three on the first team, announced Wednesday evening at the conference's annual award banquet held at the Radisson High Point.
Caitlyn Roan (Virginia Beach, Va.), McKenzie Vergara (Chester, Va.) and Lisa Lubke earned first team accolades. Ashley Johnson (Springfield, Va.) was named to the second team. Junior Jill Boyer (Severn, Md.) was selected to the Big South All-Academic squad. Lubke and Johnson were also named to the All-Freshman team.
Roan is the anchor of Radford's stellar defense that has recorded a league best 0.72 goals against average, allowing just 14 goals this season, and seven shutouts. They have also allowed two goals in a game just three times this year. On the offensive side of the ball, the junior defender's only goal this season was the eventual game-winner against Liberty.
Vergara has recorded seven goals which is second on the team and tied for the fourth highest total in the conference. The senior forward was key in the Highlanders' late season run when she scored the game-tying and the game-winning overtime goals in a double-overtime win at Winthrop. Over her four-year career, she has accumulated 27 goals, tying her for seventh on Radford's all-time chart.
Another key to the Highlander defense is the goalkeeping of Lubke. The freshman has stepped in and has had a tremendous season so far. She is ranked ninth in the nation in save percentage (.888) and 31st in goals against average (0.69), while topping the Big South in three goalkeeping categories. Her six shutouts and 95 saves are eighth highest in a Radford single season. She has recorded three double-figure save games, including a career-high 12 at Marshall.
Johnson paces Radford with a team-high 10 goals and 23 points, second-best in the Big South. She recorded her first multi-goal game in the Highlanders' Big South regular season finale at UNC Asheville. The freshman forward scored 17 seconds into the match and then broke a 2-2 tie in the 68th minute. Earlier in the season, she tallied goals in five consecutive contests.
Boyer, a 2008 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic Women's Soccer All-District Third Team selection, is an advertising major with minors in business administration and marketing. A member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Radford Advertising Club, she has recorded a 3.83 GPA in her first four semesters at the University. On the field, she is part of Radford's strong defense and has dished out three assists, including on the game-winner against Old Dominion.
