VMI's Strand named Big South Player of the Week
4 Nov, 2008VMI senior Megan Strand has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women's Soccer Player of the Week for games played Oct. 27 - Nov. 2.
Strand (Fredericksburg, Va.) had an outstanding performance last week, playing in the final regular-season matches of her career. The senior midfielder scored her fifth goal of the season against Presbyterian before assisting on all three of VMI's goals in a 3-2 overtime victory against Gardner-Webb on Senior Day.
Against GWU, Strand found her sister, Sarah, for the game's opening goal, then twice saw her corner kicks headed in by freshman Amanda Berrios, including the game-winner in the 108th minute. With the three assists, she became the school's leader in single-game assists (tied), single-season assists (8) and career assists (14).
Strand now leads the Big South in assists on the season and in Conference play. She also ranks tied for fourth (18) in the League in points on the year and tied for fifth (9) in points in Conference play.
The honor for Strand is her first career Big South Player of the Week awarding, and marks the third time a Keydet has been so honored this season (Olivia Moore- Sept. 30, Heidi Beemer- Oct. 7).
Sunday's win against the Bulldogs allowed VMI to clinch a tie for second place in the regular-season standings after being voted 10th in the League's preseason poll.
