W&M's Claire Zimmeck named to TopDrawerSoccer.com, Soccer Buzz and Soccer America National Teams of the Week, CAA co-Player of the Week

3 Nov, 2008

William and Mary All-American Claire Zimmeck (Fairfax, Va.) was selected to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week Monday, four days after leading the Tribe to its third consecutive Colonial Athletic Association regular-season title with a win over Old Dominion on Senior Night. This marks the third year in a row, and fifth time overall, that the senior has been selected as one of the top players in the nation by this organization. Zimmeck also earned CAA co-Player of the Week honors for the first time this fall, and the sixth time in her career, along with being named to the National Teams of the Week by both Soccer Buzz and Soccer America

Zimmeck scored twice on Senior Night, including putting-in the match-winner in the 63rd minute to record her 13th career multi-goal match. Down 1-0 coming out of the break, W&M was immediately on the attack. Sophomore Brittany Lane (Houston, Texas) gained possession near midfield on the right side, and lofted a pass to freshman Stephanie Gerow (Alexandria, Va.) on the right side, who one-touched the ball forward to Zimmeck on her way through the defense. With defenders close behind and the goalkeeper on-coming, Zimmeck buried her 11th goal of the year into the lower right corner, only 1:30 into the period.

After the Monarchs scored again to take a 2-1 lead, and the Tribe tied the game again on a goal from Gerow, Zimmeck struck again to give W&M a lead it would not relinquish. Senior Abby Lauer (Oak Hill, Va.) served a deep ball from the right side to find freshman Diana Weigel (Fairfax, Va.), who was too deep on the left for a clean shot. Weigel laid the ball along the goal line, where Zimmeck was able to sprint in and launch the cross into the top of the net for the match-winner. She nearly tacked on another for the hat trick with only 18 seconds to go, but her shot from the top of the penalty box banged off the crossbar.
