Radford women blank Upstate; second seed at BSC tourney
2 Nov, 2008Behind a strong defense and two goals from sophomore Kathleen Jarvis (Knoxville, Tenn.), Radford closed out its regular season with a 2-0 shutout at USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon.
With their seventh shutout of the season, the Highlanders finished the regular season undefeated on the road (5-0-3) for the first time in school history. It marks the third straight game that a Highlander registered a multi-goal contest.
The 11 wins are the most since the Highlanders (11-1-6) won 15 in 2002 and they are also guaranteed the fewest losses in their Division I playing history. Radford went 2-2-1 in their first year (Division II) of women’s soccer in 1981.
Radford finished the season tied for second in the Big South with VMI. The Highlanders will be the second seed at the Big South Championships by virtue of their 4-1 victory earlier this season over the Keydets. They will take on seventh-seeded UNC Asheville on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m. The tournament is being held from Nov. 6-9 at High Point University.
Jarvis gave Radford a 2-0 lead with a pair of first half goals. The Highlanders took the early advantage with 25:05 left to play in the first-half, as junior Justine Dugger (Purcellville, Va.) recovered a loose and unclaimed ball on the Spartan defensive end. She then passed Jarvis, who scored her third goal of the season with a shot into the bottom left corner of the net beyond Spradley's reach.
Jarvis was back again 12 minutes later with her second marker of the game. She put a powerful touch on a left-foot kick from beyond the penalty box that sailed over Spradley's head, giving the Highlanders a 2-0 lead they would not relinquish. On the goal, sophomore SharDavia Bell (Manassas, Va.) dished out her third assist of the season.
Freshman keeper Lisa Lubke (Columbus, Ohio) recorded three saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season. Samantha Spradley earned six saves on the day for the Spartans. Radford outshot Upstate, 21-5, and had a 13-3 advantage in corner kicks.
