Salisbury men net seven goals, advance to CAC Semifinals
2 Nov, 2008The Salisbury University men's soccer team advanced to the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference semifinal round Sunday afternoon with a 7-1 victory over Marymount (Va.) University in the quarterfinal round.
Third-seed Salisbury (13-3-3) wasted no time against the Saints as sophomore Ben DeLisle took a pass from senior Steven Merrow and placed a shot that squeezed between Marymount goalie William Brahmstedt's knees just over four minutes into the match.
The sixth-seeded Saints (4-11-4) answered back two minutes later off a corner kick that bounced out of the arms of SU goalie Greg Wellinghoff (four saves) and fell to the foot of Sean McAuliffe who tied the game at 1-1.
After the Saints' goal it was all Sea Gulls as SU closed out the first half with three consecutive goals and found the net three more times in the second half.
DeLisle struck for the second time in the match in the 24th minute off a double assist from freshman Sam Forline and sophomore Joe Rubel. Forline later headed a goal in off a pass from senior Scott Sparrow in the 35th minute. Junior Kenneth Price used a spin move in the Saints' box to get an open look at the net and scored an unassisted goal in the 37th minute.
Junior Alex Hargrove started the second half off with a goal to the lower left corner of the net as he took the feed from sophomore Mike Napolitano. Sophomore Chris Finney scored late in the half as he blasted a shot to left side of the goal off freshman Sam Flax's pass. Junior Chas Gray rounded out the Sea Gull scoring attack with an unassisted goal in the final minute of regulation.
The maroon and gold fired off 23 shots, 14 on goal, and amassed its second highest single-game goal and assist totals of the season. Brahmstedt made seven saves in the loss.
Salisbury advances to the CAC semifinal round for the 15th consecutive year, every year since they joined the conference in 1994, where the Sea Gulls will face second-seeded University of Mary Washington.
