GW men get key league win at Richmond, 3-0

The George Washington men’s soccer team scored three goals in a 10-minute span midway through the second half to defeat Richmond, 3-0, and earn an important three points in Atlantic 10 Conference action at UR’s First Market Stadium Saturday evening.

GW (7-5-3, 3-2-2 A-10) moved into sixth place in the A-10 standings with the shutout victory Saturday, with six additional league matches remaining to be played Sunday.  The top six teams in the league standings advance to the A-10 Championship, held at Duquesne’s Rooney Field Nov. 13-16.

Junior Andy Stadler (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa West) once again shouldered the scoring load, netting goals in the 64th and 74th minutes to boost the Colonials to their first conference road victory 18 tries.  Sophomore Steve Wujek (Cincinnati, OH/Archbishop Moeller) headed home his second goal of the season in the 69th minute to give GW a 2-0 lead.

Redshirt junior Luke Wildy (Crawley, England/Thomas Bennett) set up the game-winning goal with a cross that Stadler redirected with a header to the upper right corner.  The game-winner was Stadler’s A-10 leading sixth of the season.

Wujek also finished a header off junior Kyle Albrecht’s (Silver Spring, MD/DeMatha Catholic) corner kick less than five minutes later and Stadler capped the victory another five minutes later, slotting an Albrecht through-ball past UR goalkeeper Brock Tomlinson.

Stadler leads the league with 14 goals and 30 points this season.  He moved into 10th all-time at GW with 22 career goals and ranks 11th in program history with 56 points in 45 career matches.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Matt Scheer (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) made six saves on 13 shots faced to earn his sixth career shutout, fourth of the season.  Tomlinson had five saves on 19 shots faced.  The Colonials held a commanding 10-4 edge in corner kicks.
