Longwood women defeat Howard 3-0; Lancers advance to USC tournament championship
1 Nov, 2008Longwood University took a 3-0 women’s soccer shutout victory past visiting Howard University Saturday night in the United Soccer Conference (USC) Tournament Semifinals at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The host and #2 seed Lancers improved to 9-7-2 while advancing to the USC Championship; the #3 seed Bison finished their season at 4-11-0.
Against Howard, Longwood scored two quick goals early in the contest to take control as sophomore Alex Myers/Stafford (Colonial Forge) tallied the first score on a header at 10:00, assisted by classmate Kayla Huggins/North Haven, Conn. (North Haven). Redshirt-junior Ashlee McConnell/Carlisle, Pa. (Carlisle) added the second goal at 11:07 when she collected a loose ball in the box and fired just inside the left post as the Lancers led 2-0 at the intermission. Freshman Soraya Serra/Round Hill (Loudoun Valley) scored her first collegiate goal in the second half at 73:30, an insurance goal for the hosts, after taking a pass from classmate Nikki Supsic/Northumberland, Pa. (Shikellamy) and shooting from the right-side of the box to beat the keeper left.
Longwood took a 19-2 overall advantage in shots, including 12-1 in attempts on-goal, and had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks as well. Redshirt-sophomore keeper Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) played the first 76:16 in front of the net for the Lancers with one save, while freshman keeper Kristen McGough/Round Rock, Texas (Stony Point) played the final 13:44 for the combined shutout. Jessamyn Perkins played the entire match in goal for Howard with eight saves, while the Bison posted a team save as well. Longwood now leads the overall series against Howard at 8-1 since first meeting in 2003.
