Navy men fall to Lafayette on Senior Day

1 Nov, 2008

The Navy men's soccer played perhaps its best half of soccer of the year in the first half, but made key mistakes in the second half, falling to Lafayette, 3-0, on Senior Day at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The loss drops Navy's overall record to 4-10-3 and 0-5-1 in the Patriot League. Lafayette improved to 8-5-3 overall and 3-1-2 in the Patriot League.

The contest was the last home game for the Midshipmen, ending Navy's home record at 0-5-2 for the season. The Mids are now 0-8-3 in the last 11 home games.

"I thought it was the best half of soccer we played all year in the first half," said Navy head coach Rich Miranda. "Unfortunately, in the second half, we made errors that we can't afford to make. We made the same mental errors that have cost us all year. The errors led directly to two of their goals."

The Mids had their chances in the first half, but could not capitalize. Just five minutes into the first half, Chris Marino (Longwood, Fla.) had a good look from the left slot, but fired a shot that clanged off the left post. Just three minutes later, Kyle Monbleau (Dracut, Mass.) blasted a rocket from just outside the box that Lafayette goalie Philip Nelson swatted away at the last minute. Lastly, late in the first half, Scott Robertson (Chester, Va.) had a shot off a corner kick that was headed into the goal, that was deflected by a Lafayette defenseman into Nelson's arms, as he was out of position on the play.

The Leopards then scored three goals in a 20-minute span in the second half to blow the game open. In the 52nd minute, B.J. Glenn scored off a cross as he chipped the ball inside the right post. Just seven minutes later, Steve Ference scored on a long blast into the top left corner. Lafayette's last goal came after Shane Pruitt stole the ball from a Navy defenseman, and scored on a 1-on-1 encounter with Navy goalie Nolan Grebb (Woodbury, N.J.).

Lafayette outshot the Mids, 14-11, including 9-3 in the second half. Navy had five corner kicks to Lafayette's three and the Mids were whistled for 17 fouls to Lafayette's 12. Grebb made three saves in goal for the Mids.
