Virginia edged by No. 4 Maryland, 2-1

31 Oct, 2008

The Virginia men’s soccer team was edged by fourth-ranked Maryland, 2-1, Friday night at Klöckner Stadium. Terrapin midfielder Graham Zusi’s penalty kick in the 68th minute was the difference in the game.

“Part of me is so proud of the way we played,” Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. “We possessed the ball well and showed a lot of heart. On the other hand, I’m also very disappointed that we were not smart on a few plays.”

The Cavaliers (9-6-1, 4-3 ACC) played a good portion of the second half a man down, as Brian Ownby was issued a red card in the 69th minute. It was the third red card of the night, as Matt Mitchell (52nd minute) and Maryland’s Jason Herrick (36th minute) were also sent off the field.

After falling behind 2-0 on goals by Zusi and Jeremy Hall, Virginia battled back and scored a goal of its own in the 74th minute. Neil Barlow played a long ball over the top which was controlled by LaBauex. The midfielder settled the ball to his feet and finished a well-placed shot to the lower left of the net.

For LaBauex, it was his second goal of the year, while it marked Barlow’s fourth assist.

Trailing 2-1, the Cavaliers had two scoring chances in the final minutes of the game. Reserve Jordan Evans had a close-range shot miss high, and Jonathan Villanueva had a shot sail wide.

Virginia out-shot Maryland (14-3, 5-2 ACC), 9-4, while the Terrapins held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

In goal for Virginia, Michael Giallombardo finished with a save, and Maryland goalkeeper Zach MacMath also registered a save.
