Darvill delivers No. 7 Loyola men a 1-nil victory over Saint Peter's, clinch spot in MAAC Tournament
31 Oct, 2008Junior forward Jamie Darvill found the net in the 64th minute and seventh-ranked Loyola made the goal stand up, taking a 1-nil victory over Saint Peter's on Friday at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field to clinch a berth in the MAAC Tournament and remain unbeaten on the season.
The Greyhounds improve to 15-0-1 overall (7-0 MAAC) with the hard-earned victory, while Saint Peter's drops to 7-7-2 overall (3-3 MAAC).
After a scoreless first half between two very evenly matched squads, Darvill scored the game's only goal at the 63:46 mark on a rebound chance. Flanked on the right-side of the pitch, Steven Bantock played a beautiful bent ball into the six and Daniel Ankrah banged his header off the crossbar. The ball flushed out to Darvill though, and the forward ripped a hard shot to the left-side of the net for the eventual game-winner. The goal was Darvill's team-leading eleventh of the season. Both Bantock and Ankrah were credited with an assist on the play.
Loyola had a couple of good opportunities in a fast-paced first half. The Greyhounds got the ball in the box a couple of times to Phil Bannister early, with the forward barely spraying a shot wide-left at the six-minute mark.
After Darvill's goal in the second, the Greyhounds' defense fixed down on some late Peacocks scoring chances. In the 89th minute, keeper Milos Kocic made an excellent leaping catch on a deep shot from Saint Peter's Gamal Breedy. Kocic made four saves on 11 shots from Saint Peter's. Loyola had five shots apiece in both periods.
