Local teams do well at US Club Soccer National Cup
31 Jul, 2008By Joe Dougherty, Potomac Soccer Wire Youth Editor
Six area teams advanced to the finals of the US Club Soccer National Cup championships in Virginia Beach, with four teams bringing home championships.
The FC Virginia Synergy, who represent Fairfax Police Youth Academy (FPYC), and the VISTA Shockwave each won titles, with the Synergy taking the U14 girls "Super Group" and the Shockwave capturing the U16 girls "Super Group."
FC Virginia narrowly edged West Pines United FC Extreme from Florida, 2-1 in the opening round before routing the Florida side in the final, 5-0, which included a hat-trick by Alex Gogolin, and a goal a piece by Imani Ervins and Madison Flanagan. Goalkeepers Haley Machen and Lauren Hicks shared the shutout in goal.

The Shockwave had little difficulty in their three opening round matches, tallying 13 goals and giving up one to advance to the final. The Shockwave continued their run with a 4-0 win over Les Bois SA Elite from Idaho.
On the boys side, TAP FC Barcelona returned home with the U13 "Premier" championship, while Team America FC 93 won the U14 "Premier" title.
[Editor's note: We had originally mis-reported the above boys results, mistaking TAP FC and Team America as the same club. There is not TAP FC 93, it was the Team America FC 93 that won teh U14 Premier title]
In a score more resembling a hockey game, TAP U13 beat Real San Francisco Destroyers from northern California, 8-7 in the final. After beating New York's Middlepath FC United, 3-0 in the preliminary round, Team America U14 upended Middlepath again in the final, 3-1.
Two other local teams finished as runners-up: the Olney Rangers lost to the Califonia Odyssey, 1-0 in the U14 boys "Super Group," while the Northern Virginia Royals fell to the Lobitos Velocity of California, 2-1 in the U15 boys "Premier" group.
The tournament was held July 26-29 at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex and the Princess Anne Soccer Complex.
The US Club Soccer National Cup debuted in the summer of 2002 and has grown to include boys and girls U11 through U17 age groups in Super Group and Premier divisions. This year the National Cup started with more than 1,400 teams competing in nine regional tournaments held across the country from Memorial Day weekend through the July Fourth weekend. Regional winners advance to the National Cup Finals.
