Claudio Reyna retires from soccer after 14 year pro career
16 Jul, 2008Former United States team Captain and European star Claudio Reyna officially announced his retirement Wednesday in a ceremony at St. Benedict\'s Prep, where he had been the only two-time Parade Magazine National High School Player of the Year. Reyna\'s 14-year professional career took him to top leagues in Germany, England and Scotland before returning to the United States to play for the New York Red Bulls.
Known as Captain America by the affectionate fans at Reyna\'s last European team, Manchester City, the midfielder from New Jersey is widely considered to be the most skillful player ever produced in the United States. Reyna finished his international career immediately after the 2006 World Cup, announcing his retirement from the team after representing the United States no four World Cup rosters and accumulating 10 caps in the World Cup finals during 1998, 2002, and 2006.
Reyna\'s 112 total caps and eight goals is fourth all-time in U.S. Men’s National Team history. He also played in a team-best 31 World Cup qualifying games (tied with Kasey Keller) and in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics Games.
