Courtland girls win battle of unbeatens in AA Battlefield District
26 Apr, 2008On Friday night, April 25, the Courtland Cougars High School girls soccer team defeated the Chancellor Chargers 2-1 to take the early lead in the Group AA Battlefield District. Both teams came into the game unbeaten in district play, but the Cougars were able to make two early goals by senior Lauren McCoy and freshman Heather Schnake stand up in closely contest match at Courtland High School.
McCoy notched the first goal 6:47 into the contest. The senior sent a corner kick into the box where the ball found its way to sophomore Olivia Mabry outside the far right post. Mabry squared the ball back to the left post where McCoy found the back of the net. It was 10th of the season and 87 career goal for the Cougars all-time leading scorer.
Four minutes later, junior Heather Hudson played a ball in over the top of the Chargers' defense to Schnake who went in one-on-one with Chancellor goalie Shelby Ziegler. Schnake's high, hard shot went off Ziegler's hands, off the crossbar and in for an early 2-0 Courtland (5-1-0, 4-0-0) lead.
The rest of the half was back-and-forth and Courtland goalie Karina Monroe made a point-blank save late in the first half to maintain the two-goal advantage at the intermission.
The Chargers (4-2-2, 2-1-1) got on the scoreboard 5:40 after the break after a throw-in by Nikki Martinez. Chargers' leading scorer Becky Garrett made a nice turn on a defender and placed a shot just inside the far right post for her 10th goal of the season.
The Chargers controlled much of the play in the second half outhussling Courtland to many 50-50 balls, but were unable to find an equalizer.
Monroe finished with five saves in the Courtland goal, while Ziegler recorded four for the Chargers. Both keepers came up with several key plays that did not register in the scorebook, but kept the game close.
