Women's roster named for three domestic friendlies

After a successful run at the 2008 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying tournament, U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Pia Sundhage will bring 25 players on a three-week, three-city, three-game road trip for the USA’s first domestic matches of the year. The USA will arrive in Cary, N.C. on April 22 to begin the tour.

All 25 players will travel and train in the three cities, but Sundhage will suit up only 18 players for each match. The U.S. opens the tour on April 27 against Australia at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. The U.S. team will then travel to Birmingham, Ala., hometown of U.S. defender Cat Whitehill, to face Australia on May 3 at the famed Legion Field with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m. CT. The U.S. will finish the tour on May 10 against Canada at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. ET.

The U.S. women are 10-0-1 under Sundhage in 2008, having won tournaments in China in January, Portugal in March and Mexico in April.

All of the players who have been training and playing regularly with the USA over the past few months will be competing for spots on the 18-player game rosters, with the exception of midfielder Angie Woznuk, who is still rehabbing a back injury.

Two 2004 Olympic gold medalists are back with the squad after prolonged absences. Midfielder Aly Wagner rejoins the team after recovering from a double-hernia surgery in late January. Defender Heather Mitts is also back on the roster after missing out on Olympic qualifying while taking the final steps back to fitness during her recovery from ACL surgery.

Australia is ranked 12th in the most recent FIFA Women’s World Rankings and finished in the top eight at the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Considered one of the most exciting teams in the tournament by fans, the Australian team pushed finalist Brazil to the limit before falling 3-2 in the quarterfinals. The most recent meeting between the teams resulted in a 2-0 U.S. victory at the Peace Queen Cup in South Korea in October 2006.

The USA and ninth-ranked Canada will write another chapter in their rivalry just 28 days after meeting for the title at the 2008 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Mexico.
