Atlantic Soccer League boys set to square off this weekend

The Atlantic Soccer League's Boys Match Weekend #2 is set to begin Saturday and Sunday as part of the Triangle Friendlies in Fayetteville, N.C. with 90 teams from Under-14 to U-18 trying to position themselves in the league standings -- though Friday ASL matches have already been cancelled due to wet weather.

Due to field conditions, U-12 Navy and White Division games, as well as the U-14 Green Division games, have been cancelled.

In last weekend's girls' play, most ASL teams got two games in, but field conditions deteriorated and eventually were unplayable last Sunday.
 
"The field sites stayed open as long as possible in an attempt to accommodate the teams that had traveled in from up and down the East Coast - but eventually had to shut them down as the fields were saturated and player safety became an issue," said ASL Commissioner Kevin Darcy in a statement.

"The last things that any of us wanted was to cancel the Sunday matches but the continuous showers that came through Saturday and into Sunday made continuing impossible. We appreciate the efforts by the tournament staff and facilities to allow the games to be played through Saturday and hope that this week brings sunny weather so the fields are fit for the boys weekend that kicks off on Friday."

ASL 1 U-14

PWSI Courage Red (3-0-0) will have a chance to extend its hold upon first place, but will have to play three matches in two days, including one on Sunday against current second place team Bethesda SC Lions (2-0-1).

A top-of-the-table match between first place NC Alliance (3-0-0, 1st) and Beach FC Red (2-0-1, 2nd) was cancelled Friday due to weather, but there's still a weekend full of action that could shake up the table. Beach FC Red will play Jersey United Spartans Blue Saturday, and then Hockessin SC Thunder Sunday. Roanoke Star Blue (0-3-0, 9th) and FC Frederick 96 (0-2-1, tie-8th) are looking for their first wins in league play.

SOCA U15 Boys Lightning (0-3-0, 8th) and Chesterfield United FC Puma 96B (0-1-2, 7th) will be looking for their first wins in league play.
