U.S. youth international, Fairfax, Va. native Samir Badr set to join top club in Egypt
24 Jan, 2012Fairfax, Va. native and talented young goalkeeper Samir Badr is set to join Egyptian Premier League club Haras El-Hodood after a stint at Portuguese powerhouse FC Porto, according to Yanks-Abroad.com's Brian Sciaretta.
Based in the ancient city of Alexandria, Haras El-Hodood currently occupy first place in Egypt's top flight. Though he grew up in Northern Virginia, Badr's family roots trace back to the North African nation.
"The deal is for three and a half years and it is pending ITC [international transfer certificate] paperwork," Badr's agent, Justin Stone, told Sciaretta. "It is possible that if he is registered in time he could play in the club's next league match as one of the goalkeepers is injured and the other received a red card in the last match."
A 2009 graduate of Robinson High School, Badr was one of the top young soccer prospects in the Washington, D.C. area, earning Washington Post All-Met honors as well as a place in the ESPN RISE All-America team.
He spent time in D.C. United's youth academy system as well as U.S. Soccer's Bradenton Residency program in Florida, and represented the U.S. at several youth international age levels. Most recently, he trained with the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer last fall.
