Capital Fall Classic tournament round-up

15 Nov, 2011

By Charles Boehm

Thousands of players from across the mid-Atlantic and beyond – even as far away as Puerto Rico – will converge on Richmond, Va. this weekend to take part in the Richmond Strikers’ featured fall tournament, the Capital Fall Classic.

Nearly 300 teams will compete in 51 divisions at nine venues across the River City and its adjacent suburbs, all of them looking to round out their fall club season with a strong performance before most retreat to the indoor game as winter sets in. Those in older age groups may also play under the watchful gaze of college scouts, about 20 of which have confirmed their attendance at the event.

With many matches taking place at Striker Park, West Creek and the all-synthetic-turf SportsQuest campus, participants can count on quality facilities and the threat of rain seems to have passed, with sunny, mild weather conditions forecast for central Virginia all weekend.

Every spring the Strikers host one of the top tournaments in the nation, the massive, highly competitive Jefferson Cup, and the club sweetens the pot for Capital Fall Classic participants by offering a berth in the March tourney to the winners of CFC Premier Divisions this weekend. That perk has become a major draw for elite teams who face a tough task to qualify for Jefferson Cup through their overall results, where the competition grows stiffer with each passing year.

Potomac Soccer Wire will be on site in Richmond all weekend, providing up-to-the-minute coverage of the Capital Fall Classic competition, as well as the scene and the personalities that make it such a special tournament.
