VYSA State Cup Champions crowned in Williamsburg, VA

28 Oct, 2007

The 2007 Fall VYSA State Cup Finals were played today in Williamsburg, VA with seven champions in all crowned and making travel plans to Maine for the Region I finals next summer.

After rain postponed some games on Saturday by a few hours, today\'s finals were all played no schedule at the beautiful Warhill Sports Complex. The new complex\'s five turf fields made it possible to put all semi-final games on Saturday despite the drenched natural grass fields.

In U-15 Boys action, McLean Hurricanes defeated VBTS Beach FC Red by a score of 2:0 in the 9 AM game. Both teams had tough overtime wins in the semi-finals Saturday - including a Penalty Kick shoot out win by McLean.

In U-15 Girls action, BRYC Azul came out on top of VBTS Beach FC by a score of 1:0. The win by Azul is their forth in a row, making them perfect in Virginia State Cup play dating back to their first competition as U-12\'s.

In U-16 Boys, RKE Roanoke Star Elite lost to GRFL 91 Crew in OT. It was Roanoke\'s third time in the finals on the end of a narrow loss. It is the 2nd State Cup for the Crew team, but first under the Great Falls club banner.

In U-16 Girls, McLean booked it\'s 2nd team ticket to Maine through an impressive 3:0 win defeat of Vista Fury by the McLean Dragons. It is the Dragon\'s 2nd State Cup, and their first since Spring of 2005. The win ends a two-year run by the Vista club as State Champions, and is the third time a Vista club has appeared in the finals since the U-12 year.

In U-17 Boys SYC Jr. Royals capped an impressive 2007 with a 3:2 win over VLSC Wizards. The State Cup Championship is the second major achievement for the Jr. Royals, as they also qualified for the Super Y League North American Finals to be held in Tampa, FL in November.

In U-17 Girls action the defending State Cup Champion FC Virginia Netforce faced off against reigning National Champion McLean Freedom at 9:30 am. McLean prevailed by a score of 1:0, making them the 3 McLean team to qualify for Maine next Summer. The match up was only fifth time in six years between the two teams, and seventh year in a row for the Freedom. The only time any team other than these two have met in the finals was Fall 2005 when Loudoun HotShots lost to the Freedom 3:0.

In U-18 Girls action, McLean once made it a cool four teams with plans for Maine as the Freedom Elite defeated Vista Hotshots 2:0. It was the 2nd State Cup in three years for the Elite, but their first since moving to McLean.

The rest of the age groups will play in the Spring of 2008. It is customary in Virginia for the high school age groups to contest the State Cup in the Fall due to the State\'s moronic policy of staging their season in the Spring, forcing the split State Cup season, and also forcing college coaches to evaluate Virginia talent in their Junior seasons, as the Spring of their Senior season is often after most recruiting classes have signed commitments.
