Locals named to men's Hermann Trophy Watch List for 2010 season

13 Aug, 2010

Pre-season men’s No. 1 Akron and seventh-ranked Tulsa each placed three players on the list of 39 athletes named to the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy Watch List for the 2010 season.

The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer. The recipients are selected by NCAA Division I coaches who are members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Anthony Ampaipitakwong (Carrollton, Texas), Darlington Nagbe (Lakewood, Ohio) and Kofi Sarkodie (Huber Heights, Ohio) are the highlighted players for the Zips, while Tulsa counters with trio of Justin Chavez (Edmond, Okla.), Ashley McInnes (Aberdeen, Scotland) and Austin Neil (Broken Arrow, Okla.). The two teams will meet under a national spotlight on Friday, Sept. 24, when the Golden Hurricane travel to Akron for a clash that will be showcased on Fox Soccer Channel’s NSCAA College Game of the Week.

Reigning NCAA champion Virginia is one of five teams that placed two on the list, along with Dartmouth, Maryland, Monmouth and North Carolina. The Cavaliers begin the season ranked No. 2 by the NSCAA, while North Carolina checked in at No. 4 and Maryland at No. 6.

A total of 30 different schools and six countries are represented on the list, including players from the United States, Ghana, France, New Zealand, Scotland and Zimbabwe.

Voting for the MAC Hermann Trophy is conducted in late November, when a field of 15 semifinalists is reduced to three finalists. Those three will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, where a news conference will be held to announce the winner, followed by a banquet to honor the three finalists.
