U15 Majestics punch ticket to Super Y-League Finals

9 Aug, 2010

U15 Majestics win tough battle with NOVA FC sister team to advance to Super Y Finals

Prior to the Saturday afternoon kickoff of the South Atlantic season finale, it was already predetermined that Northern Virginia would be sending the U15 South Atlantic representative to the Super Y-League North American Finals.  What remained to be decided is who that representative would be, as the Northern Virginia Majestics and the NOVA FC U15 girls were locked in a tight race for the division championship with Saturday’s face off against each other looming.

After a scoreless first half, the Majestics finally found a way to break through the solid NOVA FC backline to score two goals in the final twenty minutes. Majestics Autumn Berry and Niomi Serrano each struck late in the second half to earn the Majestics the 2-0 victory and the automatic berth in the North American Finals held this November.

The Majestics finished the season unbeaten, earning seven wins and three ties over the regular season.  The offense improved over the 2009 season totals by scoring thirty-nine goals and only surrendering six.  2010 will mark the second year in a row the U15 Majestics qualified for the finals and winning their group in the South Atlantic.

Saturday’s result in no way underplays the amazing run the U15 NOVA FC girls squad made in the final weeks of the regular season.  The young NOVA FC team rattled off three consecutive wins to challenge for the top spot, including knocking Triangle FC out of contention for the division title and outscoring their opponents 8-2 over three games.

“Saturday’s game stands as a perfect testimony of the quality of these two teams,” commented Northern Virginia FC General Manager Tim Schweitzer.  “The club is truly fortunate to include both of these young squads as part of our program.”

“If the USL includes a wild card spot for the Finals in Tampa, I am hopeful that the NOVA FC U15s are given serious consideration, they deserve it,” concluded Schweitzer.

The USL North American Finals will be held in Tampa, Florida, and is scheduled to run from November 20th through November 23rd.   A total of sixteen teams will clash at every age level in the boys Super Y-League’s U13-U17 divisions. On the girls side, twelve teams will meet from each of the five age divisions. The 2010 version of the Super Y-League finals is the greatest representative of elite youth talent in North America now that the league encompasses nine regions across the United States and Canada.
