NOVA FC and Royals advance to Super Y-League North American Finals
5 Aug, 2010With two victories in the final week of July, the Northern Virginia Football Club claimed both of the South Atlantic Division berths to the Super Y-League North American Finals in the U16 Boys age group. The U16 Northern Virginia Royals and U16 NOVA FC Boys each earned a trip to Tampa in November and their shot at a continental title.
The Royals and NOVA FC U16 boys squads remained tied with each other for first place in the division, both maintaining a six point lead over Alpharetta United. With two games remaining against each other, both teams are guaranteed the championship bids as teams vied for two championship slots within the group. Alpharetta has concluded their season and can therefore earn no further points.
NOVA FC garnered their spot in the North American Finals courtesy of a solid 6-2 win over Triangle FC in Raleigh, NC, last weekend. The Royals squad grabbed their share of first place in dramatic fashion, thumping nearby rival Fredericksburg 9-0.
Northern Virginia last earned two championship bids within the same division in 2009. The Northern Virginia Royals and NOVA FC Boys U13 teams each qualified for last year’s tournament.
The USL North American Finals will be held in Tampa, Florida, and is scheduled to run from November 20th through November 23rd. A total of sixteen teams will clash at every age level in the boys Super Y-League’s U13-U17 divisions. On the girls side, twelve teams will meet from each of the five age divisions. The 2010 version of the Super Y-League finals is the greatest representative of elite youth talent in North America now that the league encompasses nine regions across the United States and Canada.
