30 Jul, 2010

The D.C. United U17 Academy team won the 2010 SUM U-17 Cup championship on Thursday at Robertson Stadium in Houston, Texas after defeating Real Salt Lake 5-4 in a penalty kick shootout.

D.C. United Academy goalkeeper Dakota Niedermeier was the hero of the game, saving five consecutive penalty kicks and scoring the game-winning penalty kick. He also made at least four big saves in regulation.

It was the second shootout win of the tournament for Niedermeier, who beat Chicago 5-3 in the opening game of the tournament. He played 314 minutes in the tournament and allowed one goal – a 0.29 GAA – and won two shootouts.
