A few highlight\'s from today\'s matches…
Under-17 Girls
After a day one loss to fellow National League representative, So Cal Blues, the Slammers FC (CA-S) Under-17 Girls was looking for redemption as they faced Michigan Hawks 93. Emily Dillon gave Slammers the 2nd minute lead, but Lisa Vogel countered for the Hawks in the 22nd. US Youth Soccer ODP Region IV player, Tessa Andujar, hit a Slammers goal in the 33rd for the 2-1 halftime lead. The Hawks flew away in the second half, with Genevieve Shaba (55th) and Alexandra Heffron (73rd) goals for the 3-2 win.
Under-17 Girls Syosset Sting 92 Elite of Eastern New York, the Region I champion and third place National League team, today tallied their second win at nationals over D\'Feeters 93 (N-TX), 2-1. Led by Chioma Ubogagu, a member of the Under-18 U.S. National Team, the D\'Feeters went up 1-0 with Ubogagu\'s 9th minute goal. Syosset continued to press for scoring opportunities and Amy Marron hit the equalizer in the 64th minute and teammate Liana Cornacchio\'s 75th minute strike would be the Syosset game-winner.
National League champion, So Cal Blues Dodge, was looking for their second win of group play against Real So Cal White. The cross-state rivals knew their opponents very well, but the Blues prevailed with a 57th minute Emily Goldstein strike for the 1-0 win. This is the Blues\' third appearance at nationals, and with six points going into the final day of round robin play, they have their sights set on making their second showing in the championship final, this time hoping to claim the title.
Under-17 Boys
The tag team of Eric Carrion and Karl Chester put the Alpharetta Ambush 93 Red (GA) at the top of the Under-17 Boys bracket today with a 4-0 shutout over St. Louis Scott Gallagher (MO). Carrion scored the first two goals of the match in the 3rd and 28th minutes. Chester added two more to his resume and stands as the leading scorer in the group. Despite six opportunities, St. Louis wasn\'t able to finish and the game ended, 4-0. Tomorrow Alpharetta faces their hometown rivals GSA Phoenix Red (GA) in what is sure to be a heated match and possibly a preview of Sunday\'s final as the two teams sit one and two in the standings.
Under-17 Boys Penn Fusion Soccer Academy (E-PA) won its first match of the week today, 4-2, over Hicksville Strikers (E-NY). Robert Friskey gave Penn the early lead in the 19th minute only to see Hicksville\'s Colin Heffron negate the Penn lead before the end of the first half. Friskey would go on to score a hat trick with two additional goals in the second half and Penn teammate Matthew Sabin added a fourth in the Penn Fusion win.
West Coast FC 92 (CA-S) was up by two at the end of the first half of their Under-17 Boys match against GSA 93 Phoenix (GA) thanks to Ryan Felix. Early in the second half, GSA tied the match with two goals of their own. Ultimately the last five minutes would determine the outcome. Juan Gutierrez put West Coast in the lead and in the final minute, Tyler Peoples tied it once again for GSA, 3-3. GSA currently sits in second place in the group with both slots in the final still open.
Under 18-Girls
Three-time Region II Champion and defending national champ, Under-18 Girls Eclipse Select 91/92 (IL) marked a day two win against McLean MPS Dragons (VA) to remain undefeated since regional action kicked off in June. The 1-0 victory was a result of Natalia Jovanovic\'s 34th minute goal. Today\'s result secures Eclipse Select in the final.
AFC Lightning 92 White (GA) Under-18 Girls took the 15th minute 1-0 lead over Laguna Hills Eclipse White (CA-S) only to see Kim Allard counter for Laguna in the 34th and Rachel Schulte gave Laguna the 2-1 lead in the 41st. Laguna went on to capture the 5-1 victory with a Carolina Rivera goal and two more from Allard to complete her hat trick on the day. The win advances Laguna to this weekend\'s Under-18 national final.
Under-18 Boys
Three-time national qualifier, TUSA Gold (NC) took the field today against EastSide FC (OR) in the Under-18 Boys contest. TUSA\'s Chad Dimmer goal in the 32nd minute held for sixty seconds as EastSide\'s Ricardo Carrillo matched Dimmer one minute later. In the second half, National Team player, Mikhail Doholis scored in the 63rd and 71st minutes to give EastSide the 3-1 win and move the Oregon side to third place in their group.
All four goals of the Under-18 Boys YMS Xplosion (PA-E) and Shattuck St. Mary\'s (MN) were completed in the first half. YMS\' Brian Powers and Stephen Neumann kicked off the match with goals in the 7th and 13th minutes, respectfully. Adam Glanzer scored in the 19th to bring Shattuck within one, but before the end of the first half Jonathan Louisignau gave YMS the 3-1 lead. YMS stands at the top of the Under-18 bracket as the only team to win both matches and have improved on their record from the 2009 national championships.
Under-19 Girls
Eclipse Select (IL) Under-19 Girls and Lonestars 91 Red (S-TX) were knotted at 0-0 until the 61st minute when Eclipse\'s Mary Kubiuk broke out with back-to-back goals within two minutes. Eclipse held onto the 2-0 lead to remain undefeated going into the final day of preliminary play. Today\'s three points in the standings advance Eclipse to the national final.
Back to defend their 2009 national championship title, the FC Bucks moved one step closer to their goal with a 5-1 win over South Alameda Northstars (CA-N). Colleen Williams opened the scoring with a Bucks goal in the 4th and teammate Jennifer Hoy followed in the 13th for the 2-0 lead. Clare Roche extended the Buck advantage in the 49th and Hoy chipped in her second for the 4-0 lead in the 52nd. Northstars\' Mariah Cameron found the back of the net in the 81st only to see Hoy complete her hat trick in the 85th and secure the Bucks the 5-1 Bucks victory. Tomorrow the Bucks are set to play Lonestars to determine who will face Eclipse Select in the national final.
Under-19 Boys
FC Delco Hammerheads (E-PA) have secured their spot in the 75th anniversary James P. McGuire Cup final on Saturday evening after a 1-0 win over 2008 national champion Andromeda 91 Navy (N-TX). This is the Hammerheads fourth trip to the national championships, but a win Saturday would be their first national title. Today, Christopher Harmon scored in the 3rd minute for FC Delco and the Delco backline held shape allowing Andromeda only two shots on goal. The game ended 1-0 in favor of the Hammerheads.
The Under-19 Boys Crew Juniors (OH-S) took on WSM Internationals (OR) who are making a repeat appearance at the national championships this week. WSM, who lost top player, Danny Mwanga, first pick in the 2010 MLS Draft, looked to find a positive result today after yesterday\'s defeat. The Crew\'s Eric Stevenson scored the lone goal of the first half for the 1-0 Crew advantage. The second half featured a more direct offensive style and five total goals. During a 15 minute span the Crew went up 3-1. Both sides would add an additional goal with Crews\' Eric Erb and WSM\'s Erik Hurtado scoring in the 86th minute for the 4-2 Crew win.
