Freestate SA dominates US Club National Cup Regionals in Winston-Salem

30 Jun, 2010

Another 49 teams added their names to the list of 2010 National Cup IX Regional champions as Regional tournaments finished up Tuesday in Winston-Salem, N.C., Pittsgrove, N.J. (Girls) and Seattle.

More than half of those championships were awarded in Seattle, where 25 Regional titles were handed out during the event. Northwest Nationals led all clubs in the Emerald City with four division-winning teams while Crossfire Premier, Washington Premier FC, Westsound FC, Del Mar Sharks, Washington Rush SC and Westside Metro all registered a pair of championship squads.

“This was my fourth year now here and it’s always fun to come to these events and play the best teams from our region,” said Scott Halasz, coach of the U-11 girls’ Super Group champion Washington Premier FC ’98 Black. “Hats off to the girls, who came out and worked their tails off for all four games.”

Games were rescheduled at all three Regional sites on Saturday to allow participants to have the opportunity to watch the match and support the United States.

At the Winston-Salem Regional, 14 championships were awarded to teams from nine different clubs. Leading the way was Freestate Soccer Alliance with four titles, followed by North Star SC and BRYC SC with two championships apiece.

“We always like to come down to Winston-Salem and play against some very good teams,” said Patrick Noel, Co-Director of Coaching at Freestate SA and coach of the U-12 boys’ Premier Group champion Strikers.

“Over the past four or five years, we’ve spent a lot of time improving our U-9, U-10 and U-11 programs, doing more technical training with those kids,” Noel continued. “Seeing those younger teams win this weekend definitely shows we’re headed in the right direction. It’s nice for those kids and their parents to see that they’re doing well in comparison to other teams around the region and to end the season on a very good note.”

The final 10 champions of the weekend were crowned at the Pittsgrove (Girls) Regional. PDA and FC Delco each claimed a pair of titles while six other clubs registered one division-winning team each.

Three teams were able to repeat as Winston-Salem Regional champions as Freestate SA Diplomats (U-13 boys\' Premier Group), North Star SC (U-17 boys\' Premier Group) and Freestate SA Storm (U-13 girls\' Super Group) each were victorious in their respective divisions.

Regionals will continue through July 12 in a total of 11 cities. Regional-winning teams in the U-13 through U-17 age groups earned berths in the 2010 National Cup IX Finals to be played July 24-27 (girls) and July 30-Aug. 2 (boys) in Virginia Beach, Va., where national championships will be awarded.

Regional play resumes July 2-5 with action in Chicago and concludes July 9-12 in Pittsgrove, N.J. (Boys).
